Bartók in Space and Time
Brussels, Belgium
2024
On 20 September 2024, arts centre Bozar hosted “Bartók in Space and Time,” a concert in which Robbrecht en Daem architecten mirrored the music of Béla Bartók in space. Conductor Gábor Káli and Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen performed Bartók's “Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta” (1937), while that composition also showed itself spatially in five objects floating above the audience and orchestra. For this, Robbrecht en Daem went to... Bottelarij
Leuven, Belgium
2014–2024
On an old industrial site near the Leuven Vaartkom and the Small Beguinage, we find the Bottelarij residential site. The design for this residential site was strongly influenced by its historical neighbour, the beguinage. (A side note: a beguinage is a typical Flemish way of living where single women from the 13th century onwards lived in community yet retained their own individuality. It was a very early form of independent living for women that... Read more
Huis aan de Kade
Antwerp, Belgium
2018–2023
The project Huis aan de Kade - which is part of the larger urban development project Nieuw Zuid - is a U-shaped residential building along the Scheldt. The building block is flanked by an ample amount of greenery: in addition to the public inner garden, the project also has winter and roof gardens. The rather massive façade on the one hand and the light walls of the winter gardens on the other interact to create an overall balanced appearance.&... Read more
Louie Almanak

The Louie Almanak is a calendar of time and space, linked by pencil. Building on the Louie number series (a numerical system that plays an important role in the work of Robbrecht en Daem architecten), the contours of time were plotted like a strict score in which the seasons move. The numerical thinking that already so often defines the lines of a design here builds up a day, a week, a month, a year.... Read more

This corner building houses an exhibition and event space for Katoen Natie, combined with residential units above. The project is situated adjacent to the company headquarters. The headquarters - which consists of several former port warehouses - was previously renovated by Robbrecht en Daem architecten. Academiestraat

The interior walkway connects with two new apartment buildings... Read more

Around the existing city brewery, this area is developing into a fordable 'crafts area' (with a lively programme of small shops) and a residential superstructure (with a hotel and flats).Originally, the adjoining plot with the city brewery (the 'mother site' as it were) was criss-crossed by alleyways and squares. The present design aims to... Read more
Carhartt WIP
Antwerp, Belgium
2018–2020
For the established clothing brand Carhartt WIP, Robbrecht en Daem renovated an existing building into a new location in Antwerp. The building was given a new plinth and the windows in the front facade were extended to the plinth so that the building can be fully read as a shop. At the same time, opening up the windows allows more light into the shop and the studio, which was appropriate given the depth of the plot.Inside, the monumental value of... Read more
Katoen Natie VDW
Antwerp, Belgium
2020–…
Located between the many historical warehouses in the ‘Natiebuurt’ and around the corner from their headquarters, Robbrecht en Daem architecten designed this new residential building for Katoen Natie. On the one hand, the design refers to the surrounding 'warehouse architecture', but it also wants to retain the smaller grain and vertical articulation of the existing terraced houses. The staggered cornice emphasises this verticality and... Read more

This central room became a kaleidoscopic space, a pentagonal form with different sides.... Read more
Park Abbey
Heverlee, Belgium
2019–…
Park Abbey is a 12th-century heritage site that is undergoing a complete restoration by Studio Roma. For the design of the circulation within the abbey's eastern (and primarily public) wing, Studio Roma called on Robbrecht en Daem architecten. Within this design, two tower volumes with a pentagonal footprint were chosen as circulation cores. The larger tower in exposed concrete is part of the museum route, and the smaller tower in steel serves as... Read more

Campus of the Royal College of Art
London, United Kingdom
2016
The extension of the Royal College of Art at Battersea is a piece of art infrastructure. Free ‘platforms’ for creation allow current and future flexibility. As a terraced extension of the street an additional collective space – ‘the Stoa’, encourages interaction between staff, students and researchers. The hybrid nature of its design makes it the focal emblematic space the whole RCA community can associate with – a new identity... Read more

The reconstruction of the Zuidboulevard in Waregem ensures a thorough renovation of the city. The Zuidboulevard is the new gateway to the city and connects the cultural centre De Schakel, the city hall and the new library with each other. Instead of being a cul-de-sac, this renewed boulevard is a turning point, a climax for the previously interrupted loop for shopping, walking and cycling. State Archives
Ghent, Belgium
2010–2014
The volume for the State Archives, located in the city center, is meticulously matched to the scale of the surrounding buildings. The sturdy corner building respects the pattern of the street onto which it fronts, while the long horizontal volume behind adheres to the cornice height of the surrounding streets and alleys. At the end of the horizontal wing, the facade is set back from the plot boundary. This makes space available for a small public... Read more

Route N16 - Public Places for Private Experience
Puurs, Belgium
2012–2013
‘Route N16 – Public Places for Private Experience’ is an exhibition and a pragmatic study that explores the limits and potentialities of public space along the N16. The regional N16 road crosses what we can safely call the heart of the Flemish urban sprawl. Four communes, Bornem, Puurs, Willebroek and Mechelen, all located in the province of Antwerp, are connected by the N16. This road winds through an area that is almost exemplary for... Read more
Raoul De Keyser: De Dingen Die Ik Zie
Brussels, Belgium
2010–2011
Raoul De Keyser’s oeuvre is permeated by an original, internal and inherently spatial constellation. De Keyser’s paintings do not fit within the Renaissance idiom of a window upon an illusory perspective. The paintings shift, glide, oscillate, overlap and, at times, they also fall. Even when they do in fact suggest an architectonic space, a cabinet for example, there is a certain spatial friction. It is precisely this extremely controlled... Read more

Möbel und Räume Für Hermann Lange

2007
Robbrecht en Daem was commissioned by Christiane Lange to design the exhibition of the furnishings and interior spaces that Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich had designed for Haus Lange, a building designed by Mies van der Rohe himself. The exhibition was held in the place where only recently this furniture was used on a daily basis. The house has since been converted into a museum and the architecture of Mies van der Rohe has become an object on... Read more
Garden Pavilion
Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium
2002–2004
This garden house with swimming pool is a two-storey wooden structure with an irregular floor plan. The load-bearing wooden beams form a pattern of adjoining triangles. A sculptural hearth element runs up through the volume as a solid supporting pillar. On the ground floor there are changing rooms, a sauna and a hammam, and upstairs a flat with kitchen. The roof is fitted out as a terrace amidst the treetops.... Read more
Michiels House
Essene, Belgium
1999–2003
A complex but recognisable setting is composed of a church, a vicarage, a glebe, a brick silo, a brewery, and above all a set of large trees. In short, an idyllic and typical Flemish landscape that somehow predates the Second World War neither touched nor spoiled. In all its aristocratic allure, the 18th-century vicarage exudes a forgotten past that poses a real challenge to all things new. The humble garden walls form a dominant role in the... Read more
Ligeti Bench
Belgium
2002
The ‘Ligeti bench’, which was designed for the foyers of the Concert Hall in Bruges (1999– 2002), ranks as one of the most empathically coloured designs of Robbrecht en Daem. This piece derived from the idea of introducing lightness as a contrast to the rigid concrete interiors of the building. A low, deep bench was designed and painted in stripes, with a colour composition inspired by the precisely conceived Farbenklavier of Le Corbusier.... Read more
De Causmaecker House
Lokeren, Belgium
1996–2001
The nineteenth-century, rather dark mansion with a narrow, long city garden in the center was transformed into a contemporary light-filled residence with a pharmacy. Above the renovated pharmacy and between the volumes of the main building, a patio gives a view of the tower of the 18th-century baroque church through wall-high windows, while a skylight brings daylight into the pharmacy workspace. The patio is like a heart between the various... Read more
Garden House
Vosselare, Belgium
1997
The garden pavilion in Vosselare was the first in a series of small architectural objects. In the studio of Robbrecht en Daem, these small structures give rise to a reflection on their position as architects and the status of architecture as such. In connection with this project, Juan Muñoz wrote ‘Estimado Amigo’.... Read more
Canal Houses
Ghent, Belgium
1993–1997
The white-plastered façades of the Canal Houses have a tripartite structure reminiscent of Italian palazzi: the ground floor with its own fenestration rhythm and façade cladding is distinguished from the rest of the building; the three storeys situated above are crowned by a pronounced cornice; above this is the fourth storey together with the slightly setback penthouses. The proportioning of the entire complex, the continuous cornice and the... Read more
Canal Houses Interior Apartment
Ghent, Belgium
1993–1997
In the Canal Houses apartment building – designed by Robbrecht and Daem architecten – a three-story penthouse apartment was also furnished by the architects. The sober and warm design is achieved through the textures and colors of the materials. A striking feature is the floor in light gray Piedmont Serena, which is a neutral base for the installation of artworks. An oak staircase connects the two other levels where the floor is also in oak... Read more

Mys House
Oudenaarde, Belgium
1983–1992
The building trade and the social situation in the early years of our practice were such that the majority of our commissions consisted of interventions to existing buildings or spatial redesigns of building complexes. In this way we contributed to the sum total of the building activity which - in an on-going interrelationship of action and reception produced a considerable material output at that time. We perceive that totality as primary matter... Read more
Richter Table
Belgium
1992
This desk was made as a birthday present in 1992 for the artist Gerhard Richter and was conceived with the idea of creating space in which for him to contemplate. Built out of cherry-wood with a linoleum desktop, the piece displays an elegant simplicity. Its trapezium, horizontal surface tilts slightly from the longer upper side towards the shorter front. Like old school desks the small table has storage under the horizontal surface, which... Read more

Floor for a sculpture, Wall for a painting
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
