Castra is a stage design created for HORST, an arts & music festival on the beautiful location of the Horst castle. The ring-shaped pavilion invites and radiates expectation. The shell in translucent corrugated sheets captures and diffuses light and shows a distorted and suggestive image of what is going on inside. The glimmering and hazy halo provides shelter while defining an elementary architecture with simple means. In the context of landscape and castle, the intervention provokes thought about the idea of enclosure and vault, but also about the more precarious possibilities of the envelope.
As a defined pavilion within the surrounding the inside of the sculpture lends itself well to an intimate dance floor where a fascinating interaction between the viewer and the artist is created.
The two-day festival counts as the opening ceremony for a two-month exposition of site-specific scenographic interventions, installations and constructions selected by artistic curators of the festival, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.
